Question about Seven Pounds for those knowledgeable about literature and have seen the movie?
The title Seven Pounds, is it a reference to Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and his desire for a pound of Antonio’s flesh? Is there some other reference that a pound of flesh is taken from?
I think it does. In the movie, he felt that he had to help 7 people, through drastic means, because of the 7 people killed in the accident. A pound of flesh for each debt owed = 7lbs.

Not to my knowledge, I believe it comes from the fact that the heart weighs seven pounds…at least that’s what I heard….

I heard of the Seven Seas but not Seven Pounds. The pounds of fresh from Antonio will be the same as the pounds of feathers. The story from Shakespeare is a lesson to learn on the kind of characters and their extreme. Enjoy the book on it and the interpretation at end of it to help U understand. I learn it for exam in 1959.

It may be
the biggest difference I can think of there is that…god I don’t do names…the woman will smith slept with in the last scene wearing the green dress…Emily?…can be compared with Portia. The biggest difference then would obviously be that Portia got Antonio out of loosing the pound of flesh while Emily caused Ben to give up his "pound of flesh". Also ben would probably be a combination of antonio and bassanio because he is in love with the beautiful woman and giving of himself (and rich) and shylock i guess would be his guilt, but in this shylock wins. Movies like this make me wonder if the writers didn’t think of any of this and we think they are smarter than they really are.
